EIGHT ACRES

A boutique lodge in the wilderness

IMG_8149

Eight Acres is resort with a mixture of wilderness, serenity and comfort. We were glad that we took up Eight Acres gracious invitation to experience a 2D1N retreat here as it is very much appreciated by city dwellers like us.

Getting there is an adventure in itself. iPhone’s Google Map took us from Bentong Town to Kampung Beruntung, somewhere around Felda Klau and it just stopped right there. There weren’t any phone signals, we were on our own as we drove pass some oil palm plantation and the dirt road winds its way up to our destination. I will provide detailed directions towards the end of this post.

Eight Acres derives its name from well, this eight acres piece of land. For years, Paul Kam (Eight Acre’s owner) dreamt of owning a boutique lodge, surrounded by nature at its best. His dream comes true when an opportunity arises to purchase a piece of land amounting to approximately eight acres, situated in a delightful position between Bentong and Raub.

During the construction period, Paul and team faced a lot of problems with sourcing and transporting of recycled building materials, generating electricity from hydro pumps/solar panels,  and even land clearing as the previous owner has planted tons of durian trees and banana trees there. With dedication and endurance, they overcome these challenges and it took Paul and his team three years to get the whole place up and running.

Mr Kam, Paul’s father is the resort manager. He’s in his 70′s but he walks faster than anyone of us. Lush greeneries and fresh air can do wonders in keeping one fully alert and healthy.

Built with recycled items and uses hydroelectricity and solar energy, the Brick House is truly a “green” building.

The spacious Brick House also comprises of six rooms which can accommodate 30 guests.

The Tatami Hall is a communal area which catered more towards team building or HR training programmes. Did I mention that Paul wears multiple hats as the MD of a human resource consulting and training company too?

We were put into the Serenity Room which sleeps three. Apart from the Culture Room, it is one of the two type of rooms that come with an attached bathroom, while the rest of the rooms are served by two shared bathrooms. Since this is an environmental friendly resort, guests are advised to bring their own toiletries and towels.

Our attached bathroom is also known as the golden toilet as the gold coloured tiles sparkle at night!

Discovery, Exploration, Contemplation

Guests can also watch the breath taking sunsets and star gaze from this roof top hide away.

The living hall and dining hall is located right next to the Tatami Hall. Hot coffee and milo is on the house, all day long.

84
It is a nice chill out spot during the day as archaic music is being played throughout as selected by customers via the vintage jukebox.

Meals are all provided for; and all these delicious looking dishes come from Mrs Kam’s kitchen. The vegetables came from the vegetable patch while the fresh tilapias came from the pond! There is nothing like the feeling of self sufficient living, and Eight Acres did it so well.

There are also different types of bin lids available to help encourage the correct waste to go in the correct bin such as a recycling bin for bottles, cans and paper.

For those with an adventorous spirit, the nomad-inspired tents might suit you better. These luxury tents are equipped with beds, fans and solar power.

The bigger tents which sleeps six comes with BBQ pit and an attached bathroom.

Beware of Durian Runtuh!

IMG_8346

Eight Acres is surrounded by hundreds of durian trees (D24 & Musang King!) but unfortunately durian is not in season while we were there. We vowed to revisit when the king of fruits is in great abundance.

IMG_8514
It is a type of wild forest fruits which the great hornbill feeds on. Hence, these giant birds are spotted around Eight Acres occasionally.

IMG_8354

As Mr. Kam took us around the premise, he introduced to us the tualang tree, which is the landmark of the lodge. It is a majestic tree which can grow up to 80m tall. It is also well known for its honeycomb built by the world’s largest honeybees.

81

Mr Kam planted a lot of wild forest trees and he even cultivated a herbs and vegetables patch. That’s purple cili padi on the left and ladies fingers plant on the right.

83
Chickens, ponies, goose and ducks roam free without being fenced in most of the time.

IMG_8489

10 ducklings just hatched overnight while we were there. They looked incredibly cute when they line up behind their mother!

82

IMG_8422
We even saw butterfly cocoons hanging from a leaf waiting to emerge! Wonder of nature!
IMG_8502
We enjoyed the cascada waterafall which creates a little lagoon in the lower part of the rock. We soaked our feet and after a while, the fishes came and nibble on our dead skin cells. So cute!

IMG_8511
The clear and cool stream water makes one want to take a dip and cool off.

Paddle Boarding

KampungBoy successfully stood up on our boards and paddled for a while, but for the less adventurous, you can sit or kneel on your board.

Eight Acres is  is a hidden retreat in a perfect setting for those just wanting to unwind. It is a symphony of water sounds and enchanting greeneries. However, if you feel uncomfortable around insects or shudder at the thought of a butterfly landing on you, can’t sleep without turning on the air conditioner, expect 5 star hotel services, then Eight Acres is NOT a place for you.
